The "market-hierarchy" model represents an important
tool to analyse transactional costs. Its analytical and evaluative
potentialities have been checked by applying it to empirical
cases of agricultural co-operatives in Emilia-Romagna. A
form of governance alternative to market and hierarchy – i.e.
the clan-stands out as the most satisfactory form for farmers’ transaction
needs. The clan meets the farmers’ goals because it
is based on a high sharing of targets among those who take
part in the exchange and it is culturally sustained. The
liability of the clan consists in a remarkable ambiguity
about the nature of the services to be exchanged.
In the last years the evolution of the agricultural transactions
and the differentation inside the social base are leading
to the crisis of the clan.
The need for bringing in transaction governance mechanisms
which are connected with market and hierarchy logics, are
arising depending on the specific needs of the farmers themselves.
